In post-war Poland, famous painter Władysław Strzemiński is a major figure in the vanguard who teaches at the National School of Fine Arts in Lodz. He is considered by his students as the great master of modern painting, but the communist officials do not share the opinion. Because unlike most other artists, Strzemiński does not want to comply with the Party's requirements, particularly with the aesthetics of "socialist realism." Strzemiński is expelled from the university, struck off the artists union, and despite support from his students, is subjected to persistent harassment from government officials who want to destroy his work and make him disappear.
